Green Party Leader meets with Rossport 5 on Day 90 of indefinite imprisonment without trial

26 September 2005The wrong people are in jail says SargentFollowing his visit to Bellanboy, Rossport and Broadhaven Bay in CountyMayo to meet with the local community and see the unauthorised development carried out by Shell, Green Party Leader Trevor Sargent TD today met with Vincent McGrath, Philip McGrath, James Philbin, William Corduff, and Micheál Óseighein at Cloverhill prison.Deputy Sargent following his visit that, “The men are receiving between 150 and 200 cards a day thanking them for taking a stand against the giving away of Irelands natural resources. This stance makes them national heroes. The more this case is examined the clearer it is that the Fianna Fáil-PD coalition is serving Shell, Statoil and Marathon at the expense of the public interest. The Irish people including the Rossport 5 are demanding an investigation into this unprecedented deal which allows a private company to serve a compulsory purchase order.Furthermore why did Frank Fahy exempt a pipeline plan for untreated high pressure gas from planning permission and how was a give away deal entered into between Ray Burke and the exploration companies without any civil servants present? The closer one looks at this whole issue the more it appears that the wrong people are in jail, concluded Deputy Sargent.InformationTrevor Sargent TD 087 254 7836Elaine Walsh Press Office 01-618 3852 / 087 914 8175
