A £500m plan to bring gas ashore from the newly discovered Corrib Field, 70km off the Mayo coast, has been formally approved today by Enterprise Energy Ireland and its partners Statoil Exploration and Marathon Petroleum.
The field, which is two-thirds the size of the Kinsale field, has the capacity to provide the country with 15 years supply of gas.
£300m is to be spent on a pipeline and £100m on the construction of an onshore treatment terminal. Local people in the Bellanaboy area of Mayo are strongly objecting to the terminal on health and environmental grounds.
A decision on a planning application is expected from Mayo County Council next month.
