Voices in the Wilderness arts project in support of Shell To Sea campaign

Voices in the Wilderness is an Artistic response to the Corrib gas pipeline crisis and seeks to culturally support the Shell To Sea campaign.
The first event was a music event featuring Liam O'Maonaigh and Ronan O'Snodaigh in January 2007 in Castlebar. This led to the formation of an arts committee (Voices in the Wilderness) which next ran a painting project as part of the Louisburgh Famine Walk in May 2007. At this day long event 6 artists each created a 6ft by 4ft painting as personal response to the tragedy taking place in Rossport, Co. Mayo.
The artists met at nine in the morning and worked well into the night. The paintings were on display at the community centre on the day of the famine walk. The resulting imagery inspired the group to get life size copies made that could be used at different Shell To Sea events. The work moved and inspired people to the human tragedy and injustice which is taking place in Rossport.

We felt that more artists would like to express creatively how this issue impacted on them. So Voices in the Wilderness are planning a large exhibition in 2008 which will include these paintings and up to forty others, at the end of which there will be an auction, the proceeds of which will go to the Shell To Sea campaign.
This project has been a collaboration between the Shell To Sea campaign, Voices in the Willderness Arts Group, Afri and the Louisburg Community development project.
