Hero’s welcome in Mayo for Willie Corduff

Rossport Five member and recent winner of the Goldman Environmental Prize Willie Corduff returned home to massive celebrations across the county this week.
The Rossport man and his wife Mary were greeted by a crowd of up to 300 people at Ireland West Airport Knock. Speaking of his visit to San Francisco and elsewhere in the US, Mr Corduff said: “We met some wonderful people, it really gives you courage. Representatives of many different environmental and other groups said they would help in whatever way they could. Many said they would visit Ireland to see Shell’s operations for themselves.”
One of Mr Corduff’s first actions in the ongoing campaign of opposition to the Corrib gas project was to give a letter to Mayo County Council at Áras an Chontae in Castlebar. The letter raised concerns about water quality monitoring at Carrowmore Lake.
Among those who met with Willie Corduff were Congresswoman Nanci Pelosi, representatives of the National Geographic Society, the Worldwide Fund for Nature and Amnesty International.
Willie and Mary Corduff will also appear on BBC World’s current affairs programme Hard Talk, which attracts up to 60 million viewers worldwide.
