GARDA OMBUDSMAN FINAL REPORT ON 'RAPE TAPE' DUE ON MONDAY 23 APRIL
-- Interim report misled public and undermined women who made recording public --
Following criticism of its handling of the March 2011 'rape tape' incident, the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) has indicated that it will release its final report on the matter next Monday (April 23rd). GSOC confirmed this to the 'Mayo News' (see link below).
GSOC's interim report of its investigation, published in July 2011, misled journalists and the public and served to undermine the case against Gardaí, primarily by falsely implying that the recording of the incident had been “tampered” with in some way.
A document published recently by Jerrie Ann Sullivan, her university lecturers and Shell to Sea details GSOC’s attempts to serve the interests of An Garda Síochána by undermining the women who made the recording public, while deflecting attention from the behaviour of Gardaí; and how GSOC threatened Sullivan and her lecturers with criminal prosecution and briefed against them to newspapers.
In December 2011, the BAI upheld a complaint by Jerrie Ann Sullivan against RTE over TV news reports which implied that the rape comments recording had been 'tampered with'.
