Funding appeal - Shamrocks & Oil Slicks

By:
Fred Wilcox

Shamrocks and Oil Slicks: A People's Uprising in County Mayo, Ireland, will tell the story of courageous people--farmers, fishermen, school teachers--who fought Shell Oil's plans to build an experimental refinery and dangerous pipeline within their spectacularly beautiful rural region. Police attacked nonviolent resisters, judges sent them to prison, and mercenaries tried to kill them. They refused to give up their struggle to keep their environment from being poisoned, polluted, and ultimately destroyed. The resistance lasted thirteen years.

I have signed a contract with Monthly Review Press, and will return to County Mayo to research and write
Shamrocks and Oil Slicks. This book is more than a chronicle of remarkable men and women in Northwest Ireland. It is about the struggles people are waging throughout the world to protect, to save, rivers, forests, oceans, animals, and human communities.

I am a professional writer. In 1983, Waiting for an Army to Die: The Tragedy of Agent Orange, broke the story on the use of chemical warfare in Vietnam. I'm also the author of Scorched Earth: Legacies of Chemical Warfare in Vietnam, and other works.

Thanks very much for your help.
