Folk legend Andy Irvine returns to Boston on U.S. tour

Irish folk legend Andy Irvine will kick-start a tour of the East Coast over the coming weeks, arriving in Boston on Thursday October 6 to play the city’s newest Irish pub Four Green Fields. The gig will mark Irvine’s first time playing in the city since the 1990s and will showcase songs from his latest album, Abocurragh, as well as other classics from his prolific career.

Irvine, well known to fans of traditional Irish folk music, first made his mark during his time with Sweeney's Men in the mid 1960s. After traveling abroad, he came home and formed Planxty with Christy Moore, Dónal Lunny and Liam O'Flynn. In later years he excelled with Patrick Street and as one half of Andy Irvine and Dónal Lunny's Mozaik.

Folk icon Woody Guthrie has always had a huge influence on Irvine’s career and drive. Over the years, he has covered and paid tribute to the Oklahoman, adopting a similarly socially conscious attitude. Of late, he has been a vocal supporter of the Shell to Sea campaign based in Co. Mayo, which has struggled for years against Shell’s plans for an inland gas refinery on the Erris Peninsula.

Currently touring Europe, Irvine will soon make his way to the U.S. to take in dates across New England, New York, North Carolina, Maryland and Pennsylvania, beginning in Portland, Maine on October 5.
