At the time of the magnitude 4 earthquake detected on the Mayo coast on Wednesday morning, "seismic survey" vessels contracted to Shell E&P Ireland were scheduled to be in the process of using high-energy explosive pulses to probe the deep rock strata within 10-15km of the quake zone.

Shell to Sea calls for an immediate cessation to the Corrib Project following the first major earthquake of the west coast.

Commenting in the wake of the earthquake close to the Corrib wellhead, Shell to Sea spokesperson Maura Harrington stated "Shell's proposed Corrib Project is made up as follows; the wellhead is in an earthquake zone; the landfall is in a landslide zone; the refinery is in a bog which may be subsiding".

Earthquake sparks fears over safety of Corrib gas field

A MAYO County Councillor has called on Minister for Energy Pat Rabbitte to address the many concerns of Erris and Mayo residents in the wake of the magnitude 4.0 earthquake that occurred in waters about 90km off the coast of Belmullet, just before 9am yesterday.

Strict safety measures for oil and gas exploration

Potential hydraulic fracturing or “fracking” and refining of gas drawn from the Kinsale and Corrib gas fields will be monitored by the State’s energy regulator before the end of next year.

Fines of up to €3 million or imprisonment for up to three years may be imposed for breaches, according to the Commission for Energy Regulation in a document published yesterday.

Writing in a newly-published Shell community investment booklet, Mr Crothers observes that ‘communities should benefit from the presence of large organisations like Shell’ and, moreover, that it is ‘essential, of course, that the community rather than the company leads in terms of ideas and plans’.

Survey shows tremor struck closer to Providence territory than Corrib

The epicentre for Wednesday’s earthquake off Mayo was closer to an area licensed to Providence Resources than to the Corrib gas field.

The latitude and longitude pinpointed by the British Geological Survey shows the magnitude-four quake, which occurred 60km west of Belmullet, was in the Slyne basin area, where Providence has two licences. However, the Department of Energy would not comment publicly yesterday, and Providence was unavailable for comment.
