Four Shell to Sea Campaigners in Circuit Court tomorrow, one faces prison

Tomorrow, the 26th of April, four Shell to Sea campaigners will be
 attending the circuit court in Ballina to have their appeals heard. One of 
the four, Terence Conway, is a spokesperson for Shell to Sea and may be
facing a prison sentence of up to six months for blocking the road.





Shell to Sea protest: Disciplinary action against one garda over ‘rape tape’ comments

THE Garda watchdog has urged the force's chief to take disciplinary action against one officer over an investigation into the "rape tape" controversy.

But James Gill, the sergeant found to have made remarks about two female protesters arrested at a controversial Shell gas project at Erris, Co Mayo will escape any action because he recently retired.

Garda to examine findings of report

REACTION: THE GARDA Síochána has said it will “examine” the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission’s final report on recorded comments made by members about two female Corrib gas protesters, and will “consider its findings”.

The report recommends that disciplinary proceedings be taken against one of the gardaí who was investigated.

ANALYSIS : THE Corrib gas controversy has been marked by flashpoints, but none more extraordinary than that which occurred on March 31st of last year.

On that date, NUI Maynooth postgraduate student Jerrie Ann Sullivan was one of two women arrested near Glengad for alleged public order offences, and released later from Belmullet Garda station without charge.

Past cases suggest disciplinary action unlikely to follow

ANALYSIS: ON THE basis of what’s gone before, the only garda involved in the so-called rape tape incident against whom sanction has been recommended has little to worry about.

In the estimated 20 cases where the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission has recommended disciplinary action against members of the force for their roles in policing the Shell to Sea protests, none has been acted upon.

The commission has the power to investigate complaints against gardaí using two routes.

Sullivan: Ombudsman investigation 'about protecting Gardaí'

Jerrie Ann Sullivan, one of the women who made a recording public in the Garda "rape tape" controversy, has said that the Garda Ombudsman investigation into the incident has been "about protecting An Garda Síochána".

Ms Sullivan released a statement through the Dublin Shell to Sea group reacting to the Garda Ombudsman's recommendation of disciplinary action against one Garda over the incident.

Garda Ombudsman: One garda should face disciplinary action over Corrib comments

The Garda Ombudsman has recommended disciplinary action be taken against one of five gardaí whose comments about two female Corrib gas protesters were recorded after the women were arrested.

The report into the incident at Aughoos, Erris, Co Mayo, in March of last year has exonerated three other gardaí.

A garda sergeant whom the report states talked about raping the women has since retired and is not subject to disciplinary proceedings.

The Garda watchdog has urged the force’s chief to take disciplinary action against one officer over an investigation into the “rape tape” controversy.

But James Gill, the sergeant found to have made remarks about two female protesters arrested at a controversial Shell gas project at Erris, Co Mayo will escape any action because he recently retired.

The Garda Ombudsman said there were no grounds for any criminal case, based on the available evidence, against any of the five officers involved in the incident on March 31 last year.
