News release: Rabbitte shows ‘contempt for democracy’ by issuing licensing options

News release - Issued by Shell to Sea - Monday, October 17th, 2011

RABBITTE SHOWS ‘CONTEMPT FOR DEMOCRACY’ BY ISSUING LICENSING OPTIONS

-- More exploration will not lead to greater benefits to Ireland --

Minister Pat Rabbitte has shown a “bare-faced contempt for democracy” by deciding to offer licensing options to explore for oil and gas in Ireland’s Atlantic territory, according to the Shell to Sea campaign.

Mr Rabbitte has ignored an ongoing Joint Oireachtas Committee review of Ireland’s licensing system.

Shell to Sea spokesperson Maura Harrington said: “By stubbornly insisting on pressing ahead with these licensing options without waiting for the outcome of the Oireachtas review, Rabbitte is displaying a bare-faced contempt for democracy.”

“It is shocking to witness the extent to which Pat Rabbitte has signed up to the oil industry’s line about the need for ‘generous’ terms for oil companies. He appears to have come under undue pressure from his civil servants to rush ahead with this latest giveaway.”

Back then, in 1983, O’Reilly was interviewed by American magazine Forbes, and outlined how his geologist selected six blocks of seabed and how Atlantic acquired the exploration rights for those blocks, saying ““Since I own 35 per cent of the newspapers in Ireland I have close contact with the politicians. I got the blocks he wanted.”

Offshore exploration permits granted

Lorna Siggins - Irish Times

Minister for Energy Pat Rabbitte has awarded 13 new licensing options to explore for oil and gas in Ireland’s Atlantic offshore area.

Some 12 companies are involved in the 13 awards, selected from a record number of 15 applications submitted under a bidding system initiated by former Fianna Fáil minister of state for energy Conor Lenihan.

The new licensing round will allow successful companies the first refusal on exploration licences over 250,000sq km of the Atlantic shelf, which is an area about three times the size of the island of Ireland.

Five companies already active in Irish waters and seven new entrants have been offered acreage on the Porcupine, Slyne and Rockall basins under a two-year license agreement.

The possibility of successful shale gas reserves in Ireland has been met with mixed reactions in the country. However, for a country struggling with severe debt and recession, the prospect of billions of euro worth of gas reserves is an undeniably attractive prospect.
