Oil and gas spills in North Sea every week, papers reveal

By:
Rob Evans, Richard Cookson and Terry Macalister - The Guardian

Documents list companies that caused more than 100 potentially lethal – and largely unpublicised – leaks in 2009 and 2010

Serious spills of oil and gas from North Sea platforms are occurring at the rate of one a week, undermining oil companies' claims to be doing everything possible to improve the safety of rigs.

Shell has emerged as one of the top offenders despite promising to clean up its act five years ago after a large accident in which two oil workers died.

Get ready for the Day of Action against Corrib gas project

Last week Shell put a notice in the paper that they will be starting the next stage of construction on the pipeline soon. The national campaign and the local community are preparing for this. As part of the ongoing opposition there will be a day of mass action on the Friday following when work begins again. We are calling for as many people to make it down to the site at Aughoos and take part in stopping Shell. The call out will go out via indymedia, this website and our mail update list.

By:
Jailan Zayan - AFP

CAIRO — Saboteurs bombed an Egyptian gas pipeline in the Sinai peninsula on Monday for the third time since February, cutting supplies to Israel and Jordan.

Officials said a car had parked near the pipeline in the Bir al-Abd area, 80 kilometres (about 50 miles) from the northern Sinai town of El-Arish, shortly before the explosion.

They said the bomb was activated remotely, without reports of casualties.
